A brand strategy is a set of decisions about why your business exists, who it serves, what makes it different and how it should look, sound and behave. It’s usually a short document, but it guides every creative decision after it. Think of it as the brief your logo, website and marketing must answer to.

What a brand strategy includes

Brand core

Purpose, vision, mission and values. These are the reasons behind the business and the principles that guide decisions. In our workshops, we work through them on paper with founders, layer by layer, starting from purpose at the center.

Audience

Who you’re really for, what they need and how they decide. Many brands define two or three audience segments with clear personas.

Positioning

The space in the market you can own. We look at competitors closely to find what they all say, and what nobody says yet.

Personality and voice

If your brand were a person, how would it behave? Brand archetypes and personality traits help keep your communication consistent, even when different people write it.

Brand story and messaging

Your tagline, key messages and the story you tell about why you exist. These become the words on your website, packaging and ads.

What it looks like in practice

For HMS, a digital health brand, the strategy defined the brand as advanced, accessible and reliable, with a caregiver archetype. That direction led to a symbol that combines a heartbeat with the letter M. For Falcon Eye, an AI safety platform, the strategy centered on vigilance and precision, so the identity grew from the shape of a falcon’s eye.

In both cases, the design was easy to approve because it answered the strategy, not someone’s personal taste.

How long does it take?

For most small and growing businesses, a focused brand strategy takes one to three weeks, usually starting with a workshop. Larger brands with more research can take longer.

Do small businesses really need one?

Yes, but it doesn’t need to be a 60-page document. Even a few clear pages will make your marketing cheaper, your design decisions faster and your brand far easier to recognize.
